Lightweight aluminium connector for harsh environment

Paul Boughton

Amphenol Ltd's new light weight aluminium Terrapin Connector Series is designed especially for harsh environment soldier communication systems. This new product development offers considerable weight savings of up to 35 per cent.

Typical applications include battlefield communications, handheld devices and data loggers, Ethernet, Power Over Ethernet (POE) and Ethernet Switch Devices, measuring and monitoring equipment, CCTV and ANPR as well as LED lighting.

Featuring a miniature size and footprint of less than 12mm, the new product is ideal for applications where space is critical and also where designers need to meet weight restrictions.

The shell design of the aluminium Terrapin Series also offers IP68 sealing in both mated and un-mated conditions which eliminates ingress of moisture and dust through the interface.

Further advantages are planforms up to 37-contacts, 2000 mating cycles, integral backshell  for screening and low-cost overmoulding as well as a unique mating mechanism which allows the same plug to mate with either break-away or locking receptacles.

Other key features of the product range include an exceptionally wide operational temperature range from -55˚C to 125˚C and 500hrs salt spray.
