Better connections

AVX has extended its range of vertical wire-to-board (WTB) connectors with single-position, vertical, top-entry, poke-home connectors for discrete 18–22AWG solid or stranded wire.

The 00-9296 Series connectors provide simple, robust, repeatable, and cost-effective wire terminations to replace both labour-intensive and inconsistent hand-soldered connections and two-piece connectors. The target  industrial, commercial, smart grid, and solid state lighting applications often have limited PCB space and conditions that make it difficult to achieve repetitive and reliable processes and maintain solder integrity.

The connectors are rated for a minimum of 600VAC and up to 8A and use a proprietary, single-beam, stamped and formed, pre-plated phosphor bronze box contact that maximises board attachment strength with a high spring force and robust resistance against fatigue and corrosion They use a lead-free tin-over-nickel plating and are rated for three cycles.

The X-Y footprint is 23% smaller than the next-smallest vertical poke-home solution from AVX to ease design-in on densely-populated boards. An integral, moulded flange replaces costly Kapton tape and provides more space for vacuum pick-up in automated surface mount (SMT) placement, while eight UL-approved, colour-coded insulators make it easy to match discrete wires and reduce termination errors multiple-wiring applications.

This combination exceeds those of two-piece connector solutions with higher component costs, as well as proves cost-effective in comparison to the total applied costs — including quality, process issues, and throughput of hand-soldered connections says the company.

The range is aimed at industrial machine controls such as power supplies, motors, drives, solenoids, sensors, fans, and pumps; commercial building controls, such as security and fire sensors; smart grid meters, breakers, and panels as well as LED drivers, fixtures, signage, and streetlights.

“The vertical market is currently dominated by a combination of hand-soldered connections, AVX connectors, and AVX Stript contacts,” said Tom Anderson, connector product manager at AVX Interconnect. “The 00-9296 Series further extends our vertical connector portfolio with simple, robust, and cost-effective 18–22AWG wire termination solutions ideal for a variety of cross-market applications with limited PCB space and conditions that make it difficult to achieve repetitive and reliable processes and maintain solder integrity,”

Versions designed to accept 18AWG are rated for 8A, 20AWG versions are rated for 7A, and 22AWG versions are rated for 6A. Operating temperatures for the series extend from -40°C to +130°C, and parts are shipped packaged in pocket tape on reels in quantities of 1,250 parts per reel.
