Biometrics for consumer devices

The launch of innovative and affordable biometrically-enabled products that enhance the convenience and security of consumer electronic devices is set to embrace the marketplace in a significant manner, according to new research by Frost and Sullivan.
Historically, the adoption of biometrics has been concentrated on the government sector.
However, since 2004, there has been a shift in the dynamics towards consumer markets.
This is currently being witnessed in the wireless and PC/network security application markets for select high-end products.
Leading PC manufacturers such as Lenovo, Toshiba and Hewlett Packard have introduced biometrically-enabled laptops and notebooks.
On the wireless front, NTT DoCoMo and LG Electronics have now
launched biometrically-enabled cell phones.
An exciting new development in the marketplace is the emergence of biometric vendors that have launched products that are both affordable and innovative, thereby having the potential to penetrate the mainstream consumer market.
One of the companies at the forefront of this trend is Sequiam Biometrics. The company has trademarked its products as Consumer and Lifestyle Products.
Frost and Sullivan has published a white paper that focuses on how Sequiam Biometrics has effectively designed and developed innovative and affordable consumer-focussed biometric products.
This, says Frost & Sullivan, ranges across vertical markets such as home security systems, financial, healthcare and the hospitality industry.
“Sequiam Biometrics’ vision is to transform a biometrically-enabled security product into a convenience product for consumers,” says Nicholas van den Brekel, CEO of Sequiam Biometrics.
Sapna Capoor, a Frost and Sullivan Industry Analyst, says: “Sequiam Biometrics’ foray into the consumer biometrics marketplace is a very encouraging step for the industry.
“Biometrics being inculcated into our everyday lives is a significant shift in the current dynamics of the market, heralding the value and benefits of convenient security solutions.”
It is predicted that the increasing incorporation of biometric technologies into consumer lifestyle products is will enhance personal convenience and security in society.  u
