Displacement sensors are easy to integrate

Paul Boughton

New Elite series non-contact capacitive displacement sensor systems from Lion Precision employ the latest in sensor communication technology to make integration in data acquisition systems easy and robust.

The Elite series features the CPL190 and CPL290 capacitive sensors and the MM190 meter/signal processing module. Using virtual instrument drivers, Elite series systems can connect to National Instruments' Labview to retrieve measurements and control system functions.

A high-density connector on the rear panel of the system connects directly to National Instruments data acquisition boards. Improved performance and added features also benefit users not employing Labview.

Elite Series provides more than simple measurement information; TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheets) are used to communicate calibration information such as calibrated range, last calibration date, calibration due date, driver electronics serial numbers and associated probe serial numbers. In addition, an inbuilt fault detection capability alerts the data acquisition system if the measurement is out of range or due for calibration

Elite series systems also include performance enhancements, whether or not they are used with Labview: analogue signals to the data acquisition system are differential for a higher signal-to-noise ratio; multiple sensor systems are synchronised to prevent inter-channel interference; odd- and even-numbered channels use inverted excitation signals to null the ground current flow and eliminate noise and offset in differential measurements.

Other innovative features include: calibrated range indicator bar; selectable dual calibration; zero adjustment disable switch; front panel BNC voltage output (single-ended); and front panel ground connection.
