Peristaltic pumps perform in abrasive applications

Paul Boughton

Kieselguhralso known as diatomaceous earth or diatomiteis extremely abrasivecausing intense wear in conventional pumps. It is widely used as a filtering body to clarify syrups and sugaras a filling material and in brewery filtration.

Due to its highly abrasive propertiesthere are only a few pumps that can reliably handle kielselguhr. The innovative Larox peristaltic pump is one of the few that can.

Designed for heavy industrial dutiesthe LPP pump is well suited for abrasivecorrosiveviscous or crystallising media. A singlebearing-mounted roller presses against the hose only once per the 360 degree operating cycleproducing maximum flow per revolution and doubling the flow per hose compression. Made of the most durable and abrasion resistant materialsthe robust Larox LPP is a safe and reliable pump even when handling the most aggressive media.

Paulaner Brauereithe largest brewery in Munich replaced a traditional hose pump with a Larox peristaltic pump (LPP40) to feed kieselguhr to a Larox pressure filter which dewaters the spent kieselguhr before disposal. Since its installation in June 2005the pump has been in continuous operation and has optimised their filtration efficiency.
