GSM module for use with 70mm signal columns

Paul Boughton

The long-distance visibility provided by signal columns is excellent for communicating system status, especially when plant operators and maintenance engineers have many processes or machines to monitor.

However, traditional audio-visual elements tend to rely on the operator staying within sight or earshot, which can be impractical when locations are spread over a wide area or during out-of-hours operation.

An innovative wireless GSM module is being launched by Siemens Automation and Drives that provides a convenient solution to this common problem. The module is part of the Sirius 8WD44 range of signal columns.

It can be quickly configured to send either standard or bespoke SMS text messages to a mobile telephone or even make a call to a landline, depending on the user's requirements. This means that personnel can be quickly called to the point of need without having to restrict their movements to the same room as the process or rely on notifications over public address systems. As a result, downtime can be reduced and productivity can be improved.

The module stores up to three telephone numbers with individual user masks, ensuring that adequate business cover is given in critical situations (such as process stoppage), while still preventing plant managers receiving 'nuisance' texts if signals relate to routine operation.

Siemens claims that the SIRIUS 8WD44 GSM module is easily configured, even in retrofit applications, and requires no complex wiring or programming, nor any changes to PLC hardware. This allows the SIRIUS 8WD44 GSM modules to be used to monitor as many or as few processes in a manufacturing location as are necessary. Flexible and scalable, the system can monitor whichever machines are currently under observation.
