Quiet gearmotors even quieter

Paul Boughton

Zeitlauf's Performax gearmotors are now available in special noiseless versions for particularly demanding applications, such as driving peristaltic pumps in portable dialysis machines and other medical equipment which may be used in domestic situations.

The new gearmotors achieve their noise performance by using constantly meshed helical gears in all stages. The gears are precision fabricated from engineering plastics, and feature a tooth profile that has been specifically developed to minimise noise generation.

The output shafts, which are ground and hardened as standard, run on double ball bearings, and noise levels are still further reduced by the use of solid aluminium housings which provide efficient acoustic damping.

Performax noiseless gearmotors from Zeitlauf are available in the popular 42mm and 50mm sizes. Types with single stage gearboxes can be supplied with reduction ratios up to 17:1 while, with two stages gearboxes, ratios up to 180:1 can be achieved. Depending on gearbox ratio, the 42mm models can deliver output torques up to 8.5Nm, and the 50mm models up to 18Nm.

All models feature mechanically commutated permanent magnet DC motors, which are designed for operation from nominal 24V supplies, and which have an operating life in excess of 3,000 hours. The gearhead lifetime is at least 5,000 hours, and the assemblies are grease lubricated for life, ensuring maintenance-free operation.

Like all gearmotors in the Performax range, the noiseless models are optionally available with integral encoders or brakes, and are supported by a range of accessories that includes switch mode power supplies and electronic control units.
