Radar sensor for standard measurement tasks

Paul Boughton

Radar sensors are often used for level measurement under extreme process conditionssuch as temperatures above 150°C and pressures over 10bar. The construction of the sensors is therefore mechanically elaborate and expensive.

In many applicationsthe temperatures are below 80°C and the pressures less than 3bar. Radar technology would be an ideal solution heretoo. Howevermany radar instruments on the market are just too expensive for standard applications because they were developed primarily for difficult process conditions.

Vega Grieshaber KGa leader in the area of radar level measurementhas now introduced a new instrument version that was specially developed for standard measurement tasks. The completely plastic-encapsulated antenna system of Vegapuls 61 opens up new possibilities for radar through its cost-efficient design. Most importantlythe user does not have to forgo the intelligent signal processing and convenient operation which are customary with Vega products. The sensor is available in a number of different versions.

Vegapuls 61 is suitable for process temperatures up to 80°C and pressures up to 3bar. Its measuring range of over 20m opens up a wide spectrum of applications – from level measurement in storage tanks to river gauge monitoring. VEGAPULS61 has approvals for use in the Ex hazardous area Zone0.

The sensor can be mounted simply with a collar flange on the vessel process flange or fastened to a shaft wall or ceiling with a stainless steel bracket.
