Drive is 'more flexible, faster and powerful'

Paul Boughton

Schunk's new SRU-MD (master drive) is claimed to be more flexible, faster and more powerful.

This is because it combines an electric motor - for better dynamics and faster response - with a pneumatic drive - for high performance and strength - to create a precise, powerful and fast package.

The idea is simple and the effect is dramatic: the electric motor ensures fast start-up; then, during the 'flying start', the pneumatic drive contributes as a 'turbo charger' and accelerates with full power. At the end of the swivel movement the pneumatic drive supports the braking process and then control transfers to the electric motor for precise positioning. The dynamism of the two drives reduces rotation times to a minimum with simultaneous high precision.

Another advantage of the SRU-MD swivel unit is that any intermediate position can be attained as required by using the electric motor.

Peak drive torque is 15 Nm and the unit takes less than 20ms to start. Control is achieved easily through digital inputs, and position sensors and pneumatic valves are integrated within the unit. Positioning precision is better than 0.1 degree.
