Safety platform gets certification

MTL Open System Technologies (Most), a member of the MTL Instruments Group, is announcing that its Safetynet functional safety platform has been certified by TUV Rheinland for use in SIL 2 safety functions.

Customers using Most's products can now meet the safety needs of emergency shut down (ESD), fire and gas (F&G), burner management (BMS) applications and - together with Most's process control platform - they can also meet the needs for integrated control and safety systems (ICSS).

Safetynet hits a sweet spot in today's market." says Dil Wetherillbusiness development manager for Most. "As safety system companies and end users apply IEC 61508they find that they have many SIL 2 safety functions which do not require the initial expensecabinet space and on-going life costs of more sophisticated SIL 3 solutions. Most's Safetynet product offers them a real process control solution to these lower level safety functions with recognisable process control features such as Harthazardous area capability and high levels of availabilityrather than resorting to the use of PLCs".

Safetynet meets the requirements for SIL 2 safety functions with simplex controllers and simplex I/O modulesalthough redundant controllers can be added for improved availability. SIL 2 is achieved by designing-in a high level of diagnostic coverage - the basis of the TUV certification. The result is a product that has a very small package size and is extremely cost-effective.

Safetynet is built on the same platform as the Most Process Automation Systemenabling those applying it to address their process control and functional safety needs with the same basic platform. "The components may be applied in many different ways - regulatory and discrete controlemergency shutdownfire and gas detectionburner management and combustion control - but we believe that there are many advantages when the engineering environmentthe operator interfacethe look and feel of the hardware are all be common. In particularthe cost of training and the risk of mistakes are reduced says Wetherill.

As with the other Most Control Components, Safetynet is equipped to deal with harsh process environments. With a temperature rating from -40C to +70 degrees C, G3 corrosion resistance and impressive shock and vibration operating performance, there should be no reason why a safety system cannot be field-mounted, enabling users to take advantage of cabling and installation savings - no matter how tough the operating conditions.
