Variable speed actuators enhance process control

Louise Davis

Electric actuator manufacturer AUMA has added variable speed models to its proven SA actuator range. The new SAV multi-turn actuators for open-close duty and SARV multi-turn actuators for modulating duty use ACV intelligent actuator controls to give full control of motor speed.

A speed control range of 1:10 allows both accurate positioning and rapid operation. For control valves, the speed can reduce progressively as the valve position approaches the setpoint, giving a significant increase in positioning accuracy.

Speed profiles using up to 10 different speed settings across the full valve travel help to avoid pressure surges and cavitation. Soft start and soft stop minimise mechanical stresses on the valve, motor and gearbox.

Actuator speeds can be set independently for the open and close directions, and for emergency operation. Speed can also be controlled by an external signal to take advantage of additional control variables or algorithms. A further option is speed synchronisation between two actuators.

The new SAV and SARV actuators are available in six sizes covering torques up to 1,000 Nm. Speed ranges include 6–60 rpm, 12–120 rpm and 24–240 rpm. Explosion-proof versions are also available.
