Silicone elastomer meets NASA specifications

Online Editor

A two-component silicone elastomer has met NASA low outgassing requirements for bonding and sealing applications. Master Bond’s MasterSil 323AO-LO is a two-component silicone elastomer with a self-priming feature designed for bonding, sealing and gap filling applications. Suitable for use in the aerospace, electronic, opto-electronic and speciality OEM industries, the elastomer has met NASA’s low outgassing specifications with a thermal conductivity of 1.15-2.30W/(m•K).

Electrically insulating and thermally conductive, MasterSil 323AO-LO is highly flexible with a low tensile modulus of 500-700psi, an elongation of 50-60%, and a hardness of 70-75 Shore A. This combination of properties enables the elastomer to withstand aggressive thermal cycling and mechanical shock. It also has a relatively high strength profile for a silicone, offering a tensile lap shear strength of 250-350psi at room temperature.

As a result, MasterSil 323AO-LO bonds well to a wide range of substrates, such as metals, composites, glass, ceramics, plastics and other silicones, without imparting residual stress when heat cured. Featuring a paste-like consistency, the elastomer can be used as a gap filling material where minimum flow after application is desired. Available for purchase in standard containers or gun applicator kits, the elastomer is convenient for both manual and automated dispensing within bonding, sealing and gap filling applications.
