Quick release nut for subsea use

Paul Boughton

Hydratight's Quick Release Nut is a compact, uncomplicated tool, which has just two moving parts, and has been used in more than 25 successful subsea projects.

As extraction takes place at ever increasing depths, the need for remote activation of bolted applications has become increasingly apparent. The Quick Release Nut uses the latest technology which allows quick removal from a tightened stud bolt. It provides a reliable remote system that can achieve disconnection times of less than five seconds per stud, dependent on depth, with either umbilical or ROV operation.

“Working subsea creates a range of issues, which often need immediate intervention,” said Paul Hughes, Global Subsea Market Leader at Hydratight.

“Many of our clients have spoken of the need for a fast, efficient and reliable way to remotely disconnect devices, without the need for hydraulic torque or tension tooling, and we believe the Quick Release Nut is the ideal solution.

“It can be used at used at all water depths and the results we have seen both in testing and application of the product have been extremely impressive."

The Quick Release Nut uses imbedded hydraulic cylinders, which enables operation from a tightened stud bolt. It also incorporates a unique 3 segment nut design, set into a cage, to ensure maximum security of the nut when it is in position and during application and removal.

It requires low pressure for removal, with <120Bar actuating the piston rod. The piston rod in turn retracts the cage and releases the 3 segment nuts, immediately releasing the threads, ensuring quick and simple removal in even the harshest conditions.
