The PVMX Axial Piston Pump is the most advanced Vickers by Danfoss medium-pressure pump
Danfoss Power Solutions has released its most advanced Vickers by Danfoss medium-pressure axial piston pump, designed to provide enhanced efficiency, performance, and system flexibility
The new PVMX Axial Piston Pump, initially available with a 28-cc displacement, can deliver advancements over previous model series and combines high dynamic performance, low energy consumption, and an intelligent control architecture.
The PVMX pump features a continuous operating pressure of up to 350 bar, allowing improved power density, minimised actuator size, and reduced system stress. Its rated rotational speed of 3800rpm is matched to high-speed servo motor applications that require accelerated response and frequent cycling. It also operates at low noise levels, making it suitable for acoustically sensitive environments.
These specifications, combined with the pump’s ability to operate in two-quadrant modes, expand the range of suitable applications. Developed for bidirectional flow without complex valving, the pump enables flow reversal by reversing the servo motor direction or using its over-centre design. This simplifies system architecture and allows advanced motion-control functions, including controlled deceleration, fast actuator retraction, and pressure-relief cycles.
In servo-hydraulic applications such as die casting, vertical presses, or injection molding, the pump’s ability to enable energy recovery is transformative. During operations like gravity-assisted movements or mold retraction, the actuator’s reverse flow is routed efficiently through the pump. In this mode, the actuator mechanically drives the pump; the pump then drives the motor, which acts as a generator, feeding electrical energy back into the system. This process facilitates true regenerative braking and substantial energy savings, decreasing the load on the main motor drive and reducing system heat.
Compared with traditional fixed-speed pump systems, this servo-driven pump can achieve energy savings of up to 80%, depending on the duty cycle. Various factors drive this efficiency, including the pump operating only when necessary, higher speeds enabling the use of smaller electric motors, energy recuperation during deceleration offsets input power demands, and decreased cooling requirements reduce heat generation. The result is a reduction in overall power consumption, lower operating costs, a smaller carbon footprint, and improved compliance with energy efficiency directives.
The PVMX is optimised for next-generation servo motor-driven architectures; it can support speeds up to 3800rpm, a 35% increase over previous Vickers by Danfoss medium-pressure pumps. This enables faster machine cycles and dynamic response, downsizes motors and drive electronics, and simplifies system layouts. The improvements in controllability lead to increased productivity and precision for high-precision applications in forming, plastics, mobile machinery, and test stands.
Developed in compliance with ISO and SAE interface standards, the PVMX provides a full range of control options, including load sensing, pressure compensation, and dual displacement. Also available are various drive shaft and through-drive configurations, as well as several mounting flanges and porting arrangements. This flexibility allows OEMs to design or retrofit systems with minimal customisation, reducing the time-to-market and streamlining inventory management.
Yuanjin (Stein) Wang, global product management director, Pumps and Motors, Industrial division, Danfoss Power Solutions, said, “Compact, efficient, and smart, the PVMX contributes to smaller system footprints, lower cooling requirements, and reduced installed motor power. This innovative pump empowers OEMs and system designers to meet future sustainability targets while simultaneously increasing throughput and reducing the total cost of ownership.”
