New range of 3W DC/DC converters boosts upgrade efficiency

Murata Power Solutions has developed a new line of through-hole isolated 3W DC to DC converter, writes NIck Flaherty.

The NCS3 series devices are packaged in an industry standard, pin compatible, SIP format, making them suitable as a replacement part when updating older product designs to give higher efficiency.

Part of this ability to act as an upgrade is the wide 4:1 input voltage range around either a 12Vdc or 48Vdc nominal input to accommodate older designs.

At the same time, the NCS3 series comprises eight single-output regulated models providing a choice of 3.3, 5, 12 or 15Vdc output to meet the power requirements of a wide range of embedded designs.

The wide input voltage suits applications where the nominal input voltage might be different, or where wide voltage deviations are anticipated. Output regulation is quoted as better than 1% of stated output, meaning that no additional voltage regulation components are required, saving both cost and valuable board space when updating a design. Input / output isolation of 1500 Vdc is standard across the range to provide higher levels of safety.

The NCS3 devices deliver 3W across a wide range of operating temperatures from -40˚C to +95˚C with model-dependent derating, while safety features include continuous output short circuit protection and certification to the internationally recognised UL60950 safety standard.

Compared with similar products available the NCS3 series offers up to a 3% power conversion efficiency improvement that aids lowering overall system power consumption in addition to enhancing product and system reliability.
