New optical/electrical OEM insert for connectors

One of the main purposes of an outdoor connector is to protect against the intrusion of dirt and water, along with resistance against vibration.

In addition, it can transmit optical and electrical signals, as well as contain properties that make it suitable for both analogue and digital applications. Furthermore, it should work with different optical fibre types and, of course, possess excellent optical and mechanical characteristics. All these qualities can be found in the new Diamond Multipurpose DM4 insert, which is specifically designed for use in various outdoor and industrial connector types.

Outdoor and industrial conditions are much harsher than the ones typically endured by standard commercial connectors and cable assemblies. Harsh environmental surroundings can adversely affect the operation of a system using fibre optics. To combat these conditions, Diamond has developed a wide range of strong, reliable and customisable optical interconnect solutions built around the innovative Diamond Multipurpose DM4 insert. The DM4 Insert incorporates four optical or electrical termini ideal for hybrid electrical/optical applications. The optical termini are assembled with Diamond’s active core alignment (ACA) process, allowing for a combination of excellent fibre core concentricity and superior optical performance. In addition, IP ratings are met through solid connector construction with fortified ingress protection.

The new insert is the core of the existing HE-2000, MIL-38999 DM and MIL-83526 DM Diamond connectors. Furthermore, the DM4 insert is constructed to fit into a variety of different connector housings. Compatibility with tight cable and semi-loose cable/fibre construction is ensured.

Based on a 2.5mm fibre optic ferrule, the DM termini uses integrated springs to avoid contact interruptions, which allows for quick and easy assembly and repair.
