Mid-span cable attachment provides superior holding strength and bend protection

Paul Boughton

Towing multiple seismic arrays in the search for oil requires a reliable, high-strength, mid-span attachment point for paravanes and floats. The PMI Dyna-Hanger Suspension System is filling this need on a daily basis around the world.

PMI Industries Inc developed the Dyna-Hanger Suspension System (DHSS) to support large axial and transverse loads without cable damage. This patented full-strength device relies upon helically preformed steel wires to provide robust gripping and bend protection. These preformed rod sets are specially designed to match customer requirements for cable and off-axis tensions.  Multiple layers of staggered lengths (5m–10m) provide tapered stiffness and maintain minimum cable bend diameters.

The PMI DHSS can be installed mid-span on the cable without special tools. A split-body housing with an articulating collar assembly and attachment arms allows the cable to rotate and align with applied loads without inducing cable bending moments. The attachment arms and collar assembly can be quickly removed for cable handling over snatch blocks, over-boarding sheaves, and stowage drums.
