Integrated tool to measure carbon emissions

A new product will support decarbonisation in the process manufacturing industries. 

Climate change is propelled by the release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the process industry is responsible for 8% of these, emphasising its pivotal role in reduction efforts. About one-third of a chemical company’s emissions come from product manufacturing and to ensure accurate carbon accounting and achieve climate targets, it is crucial that emissions are tracked across the entire value chain, including upstream and downstream activities, as per the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG P).

To help improve the process industry’s sustainability record, Japanese multinational The Yokogawa Electric Corporation has released the OpreX Carbon Footprint Tracer, a solution that helps with carbon footprint management.

The Tracer is a cloud service that calculates CO2 emissions based on measurement data and other types of primary information collected from instrumentation systems, power monitors, and other sources, it also provides a consultation service that helps formulate strategies for calculating and reducing CO2 emissions..

Seamless SAP integration

The service helps to calculate these emissions by integrating with the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management service and ERP solution, enabling the calculation and management of a product carbon footprint (PCF) based on European standards. The support for European standards and link with SAP will help companies in the process manufacturing industries to visualise and manage their PCF.

Development background

With the passing of regulations such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) tariff and the introduction of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) tool  companies are increasingly aware that they need to monitor and reduce their footprint.

Product features

1.The tool provides a quick and accurate assessment of emissions data for verification of emissions reduction measures. It does this by using Yokogawa’s data collection technology, which automatically collects information from sensors and systems, including those from other vendors, to assess the operational parameters for individual products.

2 .The tool also enables management of a PCF based on European CO2 emission-related laws and regulations via the link with the SAP Sustainability Footprint Management service which is actively engaged in emissions-related activities in the European market. This solution helps with the creation of dashboard displays and output reports that support WBCSD*1 PACT*2, Catena-X*3, and other European emissions-related laws and regulations.

3.The tracer also provides consultation on emissions reduction in tandem with EMS and supply chain optimisation.

Yokogawa has multiple solutions that serve to reduce CO2  emissions by optimising energy consumption and improving the procurement of raw materials. While putting these solutions to good use, the company will also provide consultation on emissions reduction planning and aid in the implementation of emissions reduction solutions that rely on the OpreX Carbon Footprint Tracer to accurately measure the PCF.
