Hollow-shaft stepper motors are sealed to IP68

Paul Boughton

Astrosyn International Technology is introducing hollow-shaft stepper motors in NEMA 17, 23, 34 and 42 frame sizes, and with full step angles of 0.9 or 1.8 degrees.

The hollow shafts offer design engineers increased flexibility and enable more compact rotating assemblies to be designed where, for example, a 'split ring' type connection is required. Wires, fibre optics, laser beams, pneumatics and liquids can cross the plane of rotation through the shaft.

These motors have ingress protection ratings up to IP68, with the option of special protective coatings. Low-noise, ultra-high-precision bearings can be specified where smooth operation is critical.

Depending on the frame size, shaft internal diameters range from 6.6mm to 22mm, with holding torques from 1Nm to 17Nm. The two smaller motor sizes are also available with double shafts (ie front and rear).

A wide variety of applications is possible using these motors, including scientific instruments, radar systems, electro-optical assemblies, printers and aerospace equipment.
