Cleanova launches customised C-Clean technology for carbon filtration

This decarbonisation technology could save time, space and money

Filtration manufacturer Cleanova has launched C-Clean, a customised filtration technology to separate carbon within the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) suite.

The CCUS suite intercepts carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at the source, to either contain the CO2 to prevent it from entering the atmosphere, or to repurpose it to be used in other applications. Both methods require filtration technology such as C-Clean to separate the CO2 from solid and liquid contamination.

“Cleanova C-Clean enables co-development of customised carbon capture solutions using advanced filtration products that are appropriate for CCUS applications, said Chris Nixon, Cleanova’s engineering and products director. “Filtration technology plays a pivotal role at every stage in the carbon capture process, from the arrival of the feed gas, through chemical absorption to final storage and transportation.”

C-Clean can be tailored to specific projects, potentially saving space and using fewer resources to maximise operational performance and efficiency. This efficiency results in a significant reduction of waste, capital investment and operational costs.

“Each filtration solution needs to be tailored to specific conditions such as CO2 concentration, the nature of the emission source, the presence of other contaminants, temperature, and pressure,” said Nixon. “This means that CCUS operators and system designers need to work collaboratively with filtration experts from the outset to achieve optimal results.”

The project uses Uniq-Max high-capacity filters, designed to prevent absorber plugging by removing suspended particles from feed gases. It also features liquid and gas coalescers to ensure solvent purity, as well as activated carbon filters to remove hydrocarbons and contaminants.

Oil mist eliminators encourage environmental sustainability by cleaning exhaust air. This is in line with CCUS’s assistance in the Paris Agreement’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

“Cleanova C-Clean supports our overarching mission to enable clean environments through innovative filtration solutions,” said Nixon. “Our radical new approach makes it easier for CCUS customers to access the expert advice, ongoing support and appropriate filtration technologies they need to achieve their decarbonisation ambitions.”
