New material - and manufacturing - solution for a car suspension component

Paul Boughton

DuPont Performance Polymers (DPP) will be using this year's Fakuma event (Germany, Oct 16-20) to showcase a new material (and manufacturing) solution for a car suspension component. New grades of halogen-free nylon will also be on show.

The Jounce Bumper – an additional spring used in car shock absorbers to improve vehicle behaviour and comfort even in demanding conditions – is made from DuPont Hytrel TPC-ET and offers many benefits over existing PU-based alternatives.

By collaborating with OEMs through design, material selection and processing, DuPont has developed a patented blow moulding process that ensures optimum energy absorption.

Working closely with OEMs using non-linear Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software and the Expert System from DuPont, the design of the Hytrel Jounce Bumper can be optimised to meet static and dynamic requirements of the OEM.
