OCR reader handles all characters and all languages

Paul Boughton
Wenglor is launching an extremely compact OCR (optical character recognition) reader that is claimed to decipher all characters and numbers in all languages! Logos, symbol combinations, image fragments and print marks can also be memorised after just one teach-in process. Characters can be printed, needled, pierced or spotted. Reading, as well as comparison and go/no-go evaluation of characters and symbols, is said to be simple and reliable. Up to four different objects per image (with 25 characters each) can be read in, compared and read out, which means users only need one OCR reader for four different reading tasks within the same range of vision. Up to 20 projects and 20 character sets can be stored on the sensor.

In addition, the new OCR reader benefits from an auto-focus function so that it can adapt itself quickly to each new reading task. And even if products are transported on high-speed conveyor, the OCR reader records up to 100 sharp images per second, and it can read up to 100 characters per scan. Data is exported via the RS 232 port after image evaluation. Furthermore, the OCR reader can be quickly integrated into a production system via an integrated USB 2.0 port.

Wenglor's OCR reader is controlled by means of multilingual, Windows-based software with a clear-cut user interface. The user interface is also touch-screen compatible, if required by the customer.

Inoxsens protective housings for the OCR reader are made of high-quality stainless steel (V4A 1.4404, 316L). Accessories have been developed specially to meet the demands of the pharmaceuticals, packaging, and food and beverage industries.
