Scientific information for the 21st century

Paul Boughton
More than ever scientific publishers have a role as information brokers. Their service starts early: not waiting for contributions to come in and being transformed into some printed product but planning issues, deciding which topics shall be covered in the future, inviting authors, acquiring relevant articles - activities which only become visible with the publication of highly attractive products.

Publishing used to be forward orientated only: once a book or a journal had been printed the editorial efforts had been completed.

Nowadays information is redigitalised, repacked, restructured so that nothing slips through the net of researchers. Internet portals allow for access to pre-selected information packages. Thus www.chembioeng.com is a channel for chemical engineers. Virtual issues present real information regardless of their publication date.
