The Siemens Power Generation Group (PG) is to build a turnkey biomass-fired power plant in a consortium with Kvaerner Power.
With Ground Breaking Ceremony schedule today (27th January) the plant will be erected in LockerbieScotlandfor EON UKthe British subsidiary of E.ON. With an electrical capacity of 44 megawatts (MW) it will be Britain’s largest biomass-fired station and supply electricity to as many as 70 000 households. The order is valued at over R100 millionwith Siemens PG’s share amounting to more than R50 million.
In addition to overall coordinationengineering and project management the order also covers the supply of an SST-800 steam turbine and the civil workserectionand the electrical and instrumentation and control equipment. Kvaerner Power will supply the power boilerthe fuel handling system and flue gas cleaning plant.
Following commissioning in late 2007the biomass-fired power plant will provide approximately 70000 households with a CO2-neutral supply of electricity. During the combustion of biomass precisely as much carbon dioxide is released as was removed from the atmosphere during plant growth. If the same amount of electricity were generated in a coal-fired power plantover 150 000 tons of carbon dioxide would be released to the atmosphere.
