Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals AssociationWho we are: Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA), the first such industry association in the Middle East, has grown from strength to strength since its inception in March 2006, steering the regional industry towards a whole new era of co-operation. As the Gulf’s representative body, GPCA aims to enhance the role of the region in international debate and policy-making vis-a-vis petrochemicals and chemicals, to facilitate regional co-operation, and to ensure that growth is both sustainable and socially responsible. GPCA’s mission is to offer its members networking opportunities through various platforms to meet and share knowledge; exchange insights and expertise and advocate the development, growth and prosperity of the petrochemicals and chemicals industry and related businesses in the Gulf. Amongst the working committees at GPCA is one for Human Resources. This committee looks at the common issues facing the industry in the region which include ways to improve finding, employing, compensating and retaining skilled human resources. Given the growth in the petrochemical industry in the region this is a vital committee for the association.

Primary petrochemicals are divided into three groups depending on their chemical structure:
Olefins - include ethylene, propylene, and butadiene. Ethylene and propylene are important sources of industrial chemicals and plastics products. Butadiene is used in making synthetic rubber. Aromatic petrochemicals - include benzene, toluene, and xylenes. Benzene is used in the manufacture of dyes and synthetic detergents. Toluene is used in making explosives. Manufacturers use xylenes in making plastics and synthetic fibres. Synthesis gas - is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and is used to make the petrochemicals ammonia and methanol. Ammonia is used in making fertilizers and explosives whereas methanol serves as a source for other chemicals.
