New tram system Tramlink Project

Since 1998 work has been in progress on a new, 28-km long tram network (1435mm gauge) with 38 stops in the south London borough of Croydon. The service started passenger operation in May 2000 with 24 trams and is proving very popular. Ridership was 13.3 million in the first year of operation.

Hanning & Kahl was awarded the order to plan and supply all the necessary point controllers and point setting mechanisms for the entire new tram network. The project also comprised the installation, commissioning of all the units and systems and staff training at Tramtrack Croydon Ltd (TCL).
Hanning & Kahl supplied the following devices and systems for the project:
m Nine HWE60/100AVV-ZVV electro-hydraulic point setting mechanisms with tongue detector and mechanical locking device for grooved and flat-bottomed points.
m Three HWU40D-Z manual setting mechanisms with hydraulic damping and tongue detector for deployment in grooved rail points as throwover and spring-back point setting mechanisms.
m 19 HWU160D-Z manual setting mechanisms with hydraulic damping and tongue detector for deployment in flat-bottomed rail points as throwover and spring-back point setting mechanisms.
m Seven HWU40 manual setting mechanisms for grooved rail points as throwover and spring-back point setting mechanisms.
m 10 HWU160 manual setting mechanisms for flat-bottomed rail points as throwover and spring-back point setting mechanisms.
All the point controllers (HN0F-1R15) required to control the electrical point setting mechanisms and to secure the points were supplied with HFP/HFK track circuits.
