Following the success of the HLP SYNTH range of hydraulic oils, Panolin AG has researched new applications within the rail industry for its high performance oils.

Research highlighted Powershift-type gearboxes might benefit from high performance lubricants. The oil has to perform as a torque converter fluid, gear oil and hydraulic oil and was found to require frequent oil changes due to the extreme operating conditions. It is not uncommon for temperatures to reach well in excess of 100°C and for gearshift problems to occur due to oxidised oil deposits collecting in sensitive hydraulic valves.
Further investigation showed that most passenger trains are now operating at the extremes of design due to higher utilisation, higher speeds, greater passenger numbers and higher demands for reliability.
"Oils that have a longer life can help to reduce the logistics and cost of maintenance; oils that have a better lubrication capacity can increase the life of components and improve reliability. " said Patrick Laemmle, Executive Director for Product Development.
Panolin Biofluid ZFH is approved for use in ZF Series WG200 type gearboxes. PANOLIN EP Gear Synth VTD for use in Voith Turbo Transmissions is going through the final stages of approval.
