Aerodynamics at speeds of 350 km/h for Madrid/Barcelona

The Talgo 350 is currently being built for the Spanish operator RENFE. It will cut the travelling time from Madrid to Barcelona by more than half.

Pre-series vehicles have already set speed records of 359km/h. Voith Turbo is participating in this project in three ways: with the cooling system, the centre buffer coupler and the complete front fairings. The latter are both supplied by Voith Turbo Scharfenberg.
Voith Turbo Scharfenberg received an order from Siemens Krauss-Maffei for the company's well known centre buffer couplers and a total of 32 front fairings for the new Spanish super train. "The first front fairings will be delivered at he customer's in autumn 2002. Each of these aerodynamic fairings has an overall length of 3.5metres."
Voith Turbo Scharfenberg is acting as chief co-ordinator of the Talgo project and has recruited two strong partners. C-Con GmbH is in charge of the construction and the FEM calculation of all formed parts as well as the production of all models for these parts, while Polytech, a plastic components manufacturer, does not just produce the tools and the parts but also assembles the entire front fairing.
Voith Turbo Scharfenberg is co-ordinating the entire project management and the logistics and is responsible for the design and FEM calculations of the front fairing kinematics, the floor arrangements and the production of all metal components.
Both the cooling system and the front fairings of the train were a technical challenge. Here, solutions for the air indraught in the roof and the outlet of air at the floor during high speeds had to be found.
