BPP-Cables - Lower cable risk by better design

BPP-Cables, part of the BPP-TECH Group, is a company that has a unique role in the power cable supply chain. Drawing on over three decades of practical, hands on experience, its cable designers bring a level of understanding that reduces the risk and costs to manufacturers, operators and owners. BPP-Cables provides:

  • Product development of cables for novel applications
  • Consultancy and problem solving, engineering design and analysis
  • Procurement project management including mobilisation and installation

Risk Mitigation

BPP-Cables recognises the need to reduce the risk associated with supplying and installing subsea cables and to reduce costs to both the manufacturer and the asset owner. The challenges of shallow waters and dynamic applications raise critical issues which could, if left unaddressed, cause premature failures. Carrying out design analysis of a cable before placing an order can bring significant benefits. These include enhanced service life and a reduced project cost.

Service Life Optimisation

The service life of a cable starts at manufacture. Installation can often be the pinnacle of risk, especially if the cable is being installed in shallow water. Cable limitations, consequences of bending as well as the potential for looping and kinking can be checked with the use of local and global analysis of the cable’s cross section and installation configuration. This could lead to inexpensive optimisation of the cable design before it is manufactured. The result will be much lower risk of damage and ultimately a longer service life.

Procurement Services

BPP-Cables’ procurement project managers enable the process from manufacture through to mobilisation, installation and commissioning to be overseen by one responsible team. Specific functions can include:

  • Co-ordinating on-site engineering and offshore installation
  • QA/QC, inspection & specification control
  • Preparation of specifications & tender documents
  • Project management & cost control
  • Client/vendor liaison & interface management

The project management scope provided by BPP-Cables reflects a client’s individual requirements. This can be full project management, or more limited engineering support and third party QA/QC inspection – depending the project need.

BPP-Cables can mobilise engineers with detailed knowledge of the specifications and designs. In conjunction with inspectors, they work as a procurement team to ensure the delivery of your order to the specification, quality and schedule demanded by your project.

Product Development

Innovation is in BPP-Cables’ genes. Challenging applications, long-life materials and cable mechanics are key areas where BPP-Cables has a strong track record. Recent examples of products that have been developed through to qualification include a 132 kV, 100 MW dynamic subsea cable.BPP-Cables developed the design during a Power Cable JIP on behalf of BG International, BP Exploration, DUCO (Technip), Shell UK and Norske Shell. The objective was to design and manufacture a power cable that would meet a severe deepwater operating environment. The vision was to provide reliable asset survivability by validating a field specific design concept. BPP-Cables has also developed a 6 kV DC downhole cable designed to withstand the onerous environment of a hydrocarbon exploration well, with the requirement of being used as a retrieval wire rope.
