Prefabrication of metallurgically bonded spools for US refinery
Butting has recently won an order for producing and delivering metallurgically bonded pipes and semi-finished products for the Pine Bend Refinery of the US company Flint Hills Resources. In order to satisfy the increasing demand, Flint Hills Resources are currently expanding the processing capacities at the production plant by 50000 barrels of crude oil per day. In this context, Butting has received an order for the production of metallurgically bonded pipes with the dimensions 8-in and 10-in. The pipes made from the base material ASTMA516 Grade70 lined with TP317L were produced in Butting’s main plant in Knesebeck from roll-bonded sheets. In addition to this, the company also received the order for finishing the pipes into spools ready for installation. Based on isometrics provided by the customer, 40 spools ready for installation were then produced by us in our cost-saving prefabrication. A special requirement was the prefabrication of the nozzles called ‘full couplings’. Here, the know-how and experience in welding methods were required as the nozzles had to be provided with a special mechanical preparation of the weld edge before being welded.
