Web-based diagnostics added to programmable automation controller

OEMs and end users who want easier access to machine diagnostics and system data have a new option with the expanded line of web server modules for the Rockwell Automation Logix control platform. The Allen-Bradley EWEB module for the Compactlogix programmable automation controller (PAC) provides network connectivity and web capabilities for simplified remote data monitoring, data sharing and troubleshooting, bringing large-machine capabilities to control system applications with less than 2000I/O nodes.

As part of the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture, Compactlogix leverages the Logix control platform featuring a common control engine, common programming software and networking services that help connect to visualisation and information systems. With the new EWEB module, Compactlogix users will have improved visibility into production processes to help make better real-time decisions, resulting in lower operating costs, increased quality and better productivity.

The new module enables users to view plant-floor data via web pages, receive alarm notifications via email and share system data with external applications using extensible markup language (XML) data. The product, which can also be used as a communication module, supports bridging of Ethernet/IP messages to and from the controller.

Joe Lee, product manager at Rockwell Automation, comments: “In many cases, this module will be used by OEMs to differentiate themselves from their competition. OEMs can provide asset management services remotely – through diagnostics, condition-based monitoring, mean-time-between-failure analysis and storage management – to help end users increase machine uptime, regardless of where they are located.”

With the EWEB module, machine builders can create custom web pages containing control system data, and set different access levels for different groups of users to access or manipulate the data. Any user authorised to access the information can do so on any computer with internet access and a standard web browser – regardless of access level, all users will draw from the same data source.

There are 2MB of storage space on the EWEB module to store custom web pages, as well as documents such as drawings and user manuals. This provides users with quick and easy access to system-related information on the plant floor, thereby saving valuable time when troubleshooting.

Additionally, the EWEB module supports the Open Socket feature that allows the Compactlogix PAC to connect to any standard Ethernet device, such as RFID scanners or printers. This greatly expands the capabilities of the PAC to go beyond typical controls applications.

The EWEB module for Compactlogix is now available, and joins the EWEB module for Controllogix that was launched in 2003.
