Protecting sealing integrity of oil and gas platforms

CSD Sealing Systems is to supply over 2,000 pipe penetration seals to oil and gas platforms throughout the North Sea.

This was in advance of a recent Health and Safety Excecutive report claiming the UK’s offshore oil industry needed to give ongoing integrity maintenance sufficient priority.

The work is the first major upgrade of its kind within the UK sector of the North Sea and involves replacing seals with CSD’s advanced RISE Flexible Pipe Penetration Sealing systems.

RISE will provide fire, gas and watertight protection as pipes pass through the bulkheads and decks of the oil and gas platforms as well as blast protection as they go through blast walls.

Unlike the seals currently being used on the platforms the RISE systems ensure there will be no corrosion on the pipes as no water can penetrate the seal and because they are age tested, there will be no deterioration in its performance for at least 50 years.

There is an increased risk of a Hydrocarbon release caused by corrosion of pipes inside existing penetration seals, with an increased risk of fire spread due to damaged penetration seals.

The report was carried out by HSE (Health & Safety Executive) Offshore Division, giving evidence of a decline in asset integrity performance on offshore installations and the poor maintenance and corrosion of pipe systems.
