Device converts Can and GPS data to serial

Grant Instruments is introducing the Datataker Cangate Can-to-Ascii device as a low-cost gateway for a wide range of automotive and engine logging applications. The flexible, easy-to-configure Cangate device converts Can (Controller Area Network) and GPS (global positioning system) data to serial data. This allows the real-time data available on Can and GPS networks (such as temperatures, engine speed, brake and throttle positions, latitude, longitude and speed) to be captured and passed to either a sophisticated data logger or a host computer system.

The Cangate features two high-speed Can bus ports that allow two independent Can networks to be connected, a single RS232 GPS interface, and a serial port for data logger or PC connection. Thanks to its versatile configuration, the Cangate allows users to select parameters of interest, apply statistical functions (average, minimum, maximum) and to control the format in which data is returned. Cangate also supports widely used protocols such as ISO-15765, SAE-J1939 and raw Can frames.

Host software is supplied with the Cangate to support its use in conjunction with the Grant Datataker DT80 range of data loggers. This software facilitates direct communication between the vehicle and the logger with its intelligent control and advanced programmability.

Nathan Neal, commercial manager for data acquisition products at Grant Instruments, says: “Can networks are used in passenger and commercial vehicles and carry complex messages about almost every aspect of a vehicle’s performance. By providing both Can and GPS interfaces, Cangate can be used in a growing number of vehicle, transport and marine applications, in which there is a need to combine vehicle performance with geographic data.”
