Toolbox for managing oil and gas projects developed

Paul Boughton

Oil and gas industry veteran, Francis Kiernan, has acquired an interest in ABIS Projects, an Aberdeen-based project management consultancy.

Kiernan joins the firm as it embarks on the launch of a ‘Toolbox’ to dramatically improve decision-making on major oil and gas and renewables projects.

ABIS Projects was formed in 2012 by Andy Sutherland who has more than 15 years’ experience in leading large projects with multi-discipline resources covering health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ) across the supply chain. Kiernan joins Sutherland and Bob Cunningham as a director in the senior management team.

The ABIS Projects ‘Toolbox’ is essentially a framework for the structuring of projects, with a set of proprietary reporting tools across the oil and gas and the emergent renewables industry.

The toolbox has a number of mechanisms that will enable better planning, management and reporting on costs, time and resources relating to projects. This step-by-step system removes the need for typically high-cost project management software systems and can reduce resource and time costs. The toolbox also enables users to draft and populate project execution plans, project schedules, basic reporting systems and exception reporting systems and have, for example, been used by energy companies in a real time SAP environment.

Kiernan firmly believes the introduction of this ‘toolbox’ will enhance the service offering at ABIS Projects. He said: “There is a real need within the energy industry for support in the managing of projects. At ABIS Projects we can provide a flexible and tailored service that enables oil and gas companies to focus on what they specialise in and leave the project administration to us.

Kiernan has been involved in the oil and gas industry for 30 years. A process engineer, he has served as a director/project director of several companies in the UK and Scandinavia including Press Offshore/AMEC, Kvaerner Oil and Gas, Dietsmann Morgan Moore, Aker Kvaerner and Aker Operations.

More recently Kiernan has worked in the SME market, both as an owner and as a director, specialising in the subsurface supply chain, quality assurance and the development of supply chain software products and their implementation as software as a service (SaaS).
