Upgrade for honey processing production line

Paul Boughton

Automation and control systems specialists Denca Controls Ltd has been commissioned by Duerr’s, one of the market-leading producers of jams, marmalades and honeys, to facilitate the upgrade of its honey processing production line.

In response to increasing demand for its best-selling range of honeys from health-conscious consumers and the supermarkets that serve them, Duerr’s needed to add a second melting chamber to increase capacity at the plant.

Denca’s brief consisted of upgrading the existing system by adding controls, modifying software, configuring and integrating new hardware into the existing Duerr’s process, installing all necessary cables and putting the new system into service.

Process diagrams were drawn up and interpreted as a control philosophy programme employing a Siemens S7 300 PLC controller and a Siemens MP 270 HMI screen and new components built into the existing panels. Then, once the system was up and running, a rigorous testing procedure was implemented to ensure that the new system would run as smoothly as the honey itself.

Denca’s relationship with Duerr’s has flourished and, quite literally, borne fruit in recent years across a number of major control systems projects for the company. And it is relationships like this, founded on trust and a genuine understanding of the customer’s process needs, that Denca always seeks to cultivate. As Denca Director John Talbot remarks: ‘At Denca, we regard securing repeat business as the ultimate accolade. In simple terms, it means we’re doing our job properly’.
