MAG drive pumps 'as reliable as conventional pumps'

Paul Boughton
Sealless centrifugal pumps in the form of canned motor and magnetically coupled pumps have been available for many years. Rotary pumps, however, have only been on the market for the past 13-14 years.

In general, magnetically coupled pumps are finding increasing use within the process industries. The safety aspect is not the sole factor to be considered when selecting MAG drive pumps. The total absence of any leakage, as well as reduced maintenance requirements are also increasingly important factors. When the total life cycle cost of a pump is calculated, a MAG drive solution will often provide the most economical solution.

Current MAG drive pumps are as reliable as conventional pumps, but have the advantage that the weakest point, ie the seal, has been eliminated. MAG drive pump prices show a declining trend. In consequence, the use of MAG drives for rotary pumps will continue to increase, primarily replacing pumps fitted with mechanical seals.
