Ultrasonic flowmetering for open channels and weirs

Paul Boughton
Endress+Hauser’s Prosonic S FMU90 ultrasonic transmitter and associated sensors have been specially designed for flowmetering in open channels and weirs.

They are the cost-effective flow solution for applications in the water, wastewater and environmental industries.

Non-contact and maintenance-free, Prosonic S provides reliable flow measurement in open channels and weirs using one or two ultrasonic sensors. Using a single sensor in conjunction with built-in linearisation tables (including BS3680) or application-specific tables programmed via a 32-point table or formula, Prosonic S will simultaneously measure both level and flow.

The addition of a second sensor allows backwater to be detected, preventing the problems associated with erroneous readings. What is more, with two sensors Prosonic S can be used for pump or screen control using pre-programmed routines. A range of relays, pump control functions and test functions are also available to further enhance capabilities. Have your information how you want it: the Prosonic S transmitter will also quickly perform average, difference and sum calculations so you get the exact data you require.

Easy to use, the Prosonic S features straightforward, menu-guided operation via its 6-line plain text display. And, with no codes to decipher, it’s simple to understand so you can quickly get on with the job. The envelope curves on the display act as the window to your process, allowing you to see exactly what’s going on. In fact, everyday operation couldn’t be simpler. Automatic sensor recognition simplifies the commissioning process and Endress+Hauser’s free Fieldcare software provides reliable commissioning, maintenance and documentation of the measuring point. And, with analogue HART and PROFIBUS DP connectivity, Prosonic S can be easily retrofitted into existing systems.
