Servo drive is slender yet powerful

Parker Hannifin is extending its family of Compax3 drives with the launch of the Compax3M (C3M) servo drive.

This has been developed specifically for use with a wide range of multi-axis applications, providing a powerful yet easy-to-use system that is also extremely compact; indeed, the C3M is believed to be the slimmest servo drive currently available.

In common with the Compax3 family, the new C3M can be programmed using the standard IEC 61131-3 language, with support for conventional industry protocols including Profibus, Ethernet Powerlink, Ethercat, Canopen and Devicenet. Dynamic, synchronised multi-axis control is provided either internally or through an optional external PLC module.

The C3M offers a wide range of features to simplify setup and operation, and to improve reliability, performance and productivity. This includes the capability of straightforward positional control, with function modules based on PLCopen, or cam function modules for more complex positioning applications. In addition, the drive provides fast control loops, with positional response being 125us, while jerk-limited setpoint generation guarantees a longer service life of mechanical components.

Similarly, the system offers automatic acquisition of the load moment of inertia, motor ratings and motor position feedback, and has as standard eight digital inputs and four digital outputs, two analogue inputs and outputs, and both RS232 and RS485 interfaces.

C3M servo drives are available for use with applications of up to 30A, with the 5, 10 and 15A versions measuring only 50mm in width, and the larger 30A versions being 100mm wide. Just as importantly, the new drives allow OEMs and end users to minimise installation costs by the integration of components such as mains filters and braking resistors into the drive system and the ability to reduce wiring. In addition, the modular design of the C3M, with a central power module, enables it to be used with different voltage supply sources without the need for extra adaptors.

The C3M also complies with the EN ISO 13849 safety standard, with simplified wiring and mounting facilities enhancing safety still further.
