Siemens supply coal-fired power plants to US

Paul Boughton

Siemens Power Generation (PG) group is leading the US$1 billion project for purchaser Longview Power LLC, a subsidiary of GenPower. The Siemens portion is more than US$405 million.

The station will use ultra-supercritical steam technology which features a steam temperature just below 600 degree Celsius and a high pressure of approximately 250 bar. These conditions enable high plant efficiencies.

Siemens will supply the turbine island design and major associated equipment including an SST6-6000 steam turbine generator, SPPA-T3000 plant control system and an advanced air quality control system. This will reduce the emissions of particulates, sulphur dioxide, mercury and sulphur trioxide.

Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Power Generation, Inc, says: The Longview project demonstrates that coal-based generation utilizing highly efficient energy conversion technology and advanced emission controls can be compatible with the environment."

Site construction is scheduled to begin February 2007. Operation is slated for early 2011producing almost 700MW of cleancoal-fired energy.

In the fiscal year 2006Siemens PG posted sales over EUR10 billion and received new orders totalling EUR12.5 billion. Group profit amounted to EUR782 million and the workforce totalled some 36400 worldwide.
