Laser scanner mounts on robot

Metris is unveiling the K-Robot, a robot-based laser scanner. This high-accuracy inspection system upgrades any industrial robot or actuator into a flexible, productive metrology system, particularly suitable for production line inspection.

The K-Robot metrology chain features proven Metris metrology components combining the Metris Modelmaker D, the portable K-Series optical CMM, and the Focus Inspection Automation software suite. Importantly, the K-Robot acts independently from the robot in terms of accuracy. As such, it does not suffer from warm-up drift and backlash and does not need cyclic robot calibration. It inspects directly against the CAD model and does not require any external reference or co-ordinate measuring machine.

Each K-Robot probe is equipped with 40 infrared LEDs to make it visible for the optical CMM from any direction, allowing maximum robot flexibility and simplifying the robot path programming. Scanning commands are directly programmed in the robot path program and are therefore adaptable for different parts and models. Various interface protocols (TCP, OPC, etc) are available, enabling integration on all robot brands.

With a measurement range from 1.5-6m, the K-Robot offers the flexibility to measure small components as well as full cars.

The second generation of Enhanced Sensor Performance (ESP2) automatically adapts the laser intensity to the surface properties enabling convenient scanning of both shiny and dark surfaces in industry environments. The point clouds that are acquired at a rate of up to 80,000 points/s by the laser scanner are post-processed in the Metris Focus Inspection software for fully detailed analysis. Finally the inspection results are be presented as an Excel report or output to an SPC system.
