SIL-level identified for pressure safety devices

SIL-level identified for pressure safety devices

Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is defined as a relative level of risk-reduction provided by a safety function, or to specify a target level of risk reduction. In simple terms, SIL is a measurement of performance required for a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF).

Fike Europe's range of Fike bursting discs (also known as rupture discs) has an assigned equivalent SIL-level 3. The SIL 3 has been derived from comparison with published and generally accepted probability of failure on demand (PFD) values assigned to passive mechanical pressure safety devices such as pressure relief valves and safety valves. The paramount SIL-rating assigned for Fike bursting discs is in line with the generally determined failure rate, and exceeds the assigned reliability rate of safety valves as the number of critical components required for pressure/safety relief valves are in excess of the tenfold then those used for bursting discs.

This new and important information will assist in the general requirements from the global industries to fulfil the increasing need to quantify the reliability of safety systems used for high-risk installations, using generally recognised models for risk assessment and risk reduction.
