Budget 'delivers boost for UK engineers'
Craig Slater, director, Roevin, the leading engineering recruitment specialists, comments on the impact of the Budget announcements on the engineering industry: “The Budget confirms that this is a good time to be in engineering, with plenty of domestic opportunities across different sectors.“The Chancellor has delivered a boost for the engineering jobs market, particularly those working in the ‘green economy’. The announcement of an additional £3 billion for the Green Investment Bank [GIB], which will now begin in 2012 – a year earlier than planned – will support low carbon energy projects. Government investment alongside private finance should mean there is around £18 billion of extra investment in green infrastructure by 2014-15 as a result of the GIB.
“This means the picture is particularly positive for engineers working in renewable energy, with extra funds driving greater demand for those with specialism in this area. Prospects for British engineers on wind energy farms at home are looking brighter than for a long time.
“Past experience suggests that the Chancellor’s commitment to easing house building restrictions will be hard to implement but it’s another sign that the long-term situation for engineers is healthy.
“All things considered, the industry has emerged relatively unscathed from the government’s austerity programme – many segments have actually benefited from investment in infrastructure – and it should benefit from the focus on growth.”
