Thermal camera identifies heat loss

Instrumentation company Ashtead Technology has seen a growing demand across its fleet of thermal imaging cameras from the building inspection industry, due to the cost savings associated with energy efficiency.

Ashtead’s range of FLIR infrared thermal imaging equipment offers instrumentation to identify heat loss through poor insulation, locate excessive air leakage, carry out predictive maintenance of electrical and structural systems as well as detect leaking pipes and hidden water damage.

Two such instruments proving popular with the building inspection industry due their advanced features are the FLIR B360 and P620 thermal imaging cameras.

According to Daniel Bobker, Managing Director of Thermal Inspections Ltd, who has hired the latest thermal imaging equipment from Ashtead over the past three years, the significant cost savings associated with renting combined with the financial benefits of his clients of preventing heat loss are among the key reasons for the current demand.

Thermal Inspections Ltd specialise in infrared thermographic surveys on social housing stock for registered social landlords and commercial properties for private organisations.

Daniel said: “We have hired two different thermal cameras from Ashtead; the FLIR P65 and more recently the FLIR ThermaCAM P620. The evidence-based results of the surveys we undertake enable our clients to identify where heat is being lost so that they can take appropriate and precisely targeted remedial action.

“We have found Ashtead extremely helpful to deal with over the years and the equipment we have hired has always arrived fully calibrated and ready to use. Also, we have found that the use of thermal imaging in the UK has been growing steadily in recent times and we believe that Ashtead has been quick to recognise this and make the necessary investment in its rental fleet of thermal cameras. We think this growth is due to several factors; businesses looking to save costs through predictive maintenance, the increased requirement on local authorities to meet energy-saving legislation on their properties by preventing heat loss and people have a greater understanding of energy conservation in general.”

Both cameras offer a thermal sensitivity of 0.06°C, picture in picture fusion capability and SD Card recording. However, the B360 has been designed specifically for the building inspection market with features such as insulation and dew point alarms to highlight problems in a building’s fabric along with a tilting camera head to inspect difficult to see areas. The P620 camera has a higher specification with a larger 640 x 480 infra red sensor, 14cm LCD display and the ability to record both still and video thermal images.

Working with the latest version of the ThermaCAM software, investigation and survey reports are quickly created and integrated with Windows based programmes. Lightweight and simple to operate, both cameras are an ideal rental solution for advanced thermography applications.
