Fast switching power supplies boost mass spectrometer throughput

The SC series of high voltage power supplies introduced by Applied Kilovolts is the first in a new generation of fast polarity switching modules for mass spectrometers. These high performance source supplies have been designed to meet the needs of today's high throughput mass spectrometers.

Featuring Tru-Current technology with control at the APCI source and fast polarity changeover in less than 10ms, the modules are suitable for multimode source applications where changeover, settling time and precise current control are all critical.

Available from Applied Kilovolts' Brandenburg division as constant current or constant voltage types, they are designed for electro spray ionisation and atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation sources.

"By reducing the process time for each batch through the mass spectrometer, the rapid switching speed allows increases in throughput, giving users an improved return on investment," said Applied Kilovolts' marketing director Mark Williams.

For corona source applications (constant current mode) the minimum controllable current is 2uA. All the models are also available with switching times of less than 50ms.

Output is highly stable, with ripple less than 0.1per cent p/p and drift (after 1 hour warm up) of 100ppm per hour. The modules are true zero volt crossing, and short circuit and flashover proof. A fully screened metal case provides good EMI immunity.
