New motors for machine tool spindles

New motors for machine tool spindles

At the 2009 EMO trade show for machine tools in Milan, Siemens Drive Technologies is introducing the 1PH8 series motors for belt-driven and coupled machine tool spindles. The motors are characterised by an excellent dynamic response, smooth running properties and low vibration levels. They therefore add greater precision to the machine tool spindles, helping to increase productivity. The motors are available as asynchronous and synchronous versions.

Compared to the previous 1PH7, 1PH4, 1PM6 and 1PM4 motors, the power output range has been increased. The motors are available with power outputs ranging from 2.8kW to 1340kW. Different bearing designs extend the range of possible applications. The motors have been matched to the Sinamics S120 drive system, simplifying commissioning and enhancing the control response. For applications where space is restricted, the synchronous version of the 1PH8 motors can be used.

There are motors available with a solid or hollow shafts, different cooling methods - such as water cooling, forced ventilation or, in the future, self-cooling - plus absolute and incremental encoders. Thanks to the large power range, the high-speed range of up to 20,000rpm and the modular design principle, the motors are suitable as standard drives for conventional machine tool spindles.
