Aluminium alloy suits motorsport
CRP Technology is introducing a new high-quality aerospace-grade aluminium alloy called CRP 8601, which is manufactured by means of a special powder metallurgy process that uses high-energy mixing to give excellent mechanical properties.
The Formula 1 motorsport industry uses MMC (metal matrix components) materials (eg AMC 225xe), while super aluminium materials - such as the new CRP 8601 alloy - are particularly suitable for other forms of motorsport and the aerospace sector.
The key benefits of CRP 8601 for structural applications include: weight saving; increased component stiffness; high fatigue resistance; good hardness and wear resistance; and high flexibility in the shape and dimensions of the billets.
CRP has achieved higher productivity and quality over traditional carbide tooling thanks to high-speed machining, customised PCD tooling, excellent knowledge of the machining process, and 100 per cent quality control developed internally.
The same skills now allow CRP to offer to its customers parts manufactured from this remarkable new material, with high quality, high reliability and shape complexity.
One of the main goals in motorsport and aerospace is to reach a very high stiffness for mechanical components. Another goal is to seek lower weight for all structural parts. CRP 8601 is claimed to be an excellent balance of high stiffness and low weight.
